I’d like to think that I am a fairly typical middle of the pack, middle aged athlete.  Like many, I started exercising to lose weight.  This eventually lead to running, triathlon, cycling, etc… and it worked!  I initially lost 70# but recently I have struggled with gaining and losing the same 20-30# every winter and summer and I’m tired of it. My Swimming Sucks

triathlete swimmingI love swimming.  My first athletic language was swimming.  Swimming opened doors and took me places I never could have imagined the first time I participated in a formal swim workout.  So, I experience both a sadness and an excitement when I hear someone lament their poor swimming.  Sadness because I would like that everyone shares my joy of swimming and swims proficiently; excitement because every person that asks me how they can swim faster is another opportunity to help someone improve their swimming. After two straight years of solid (although inconsistent) Ironman training I found that I’ve completely lost my triathlon mojo.  I’m struggling to even hop on the bike, and as those who know me will attest, that’s not normal.  I have zero races on the calendar going forward and have no motivation to sign up for one… until this past weekend! Improving Ankle Flexibility

Improving your ankle flexibility can have a dramatic impact upon your swim splits by reducing the amount of drag created by your legs.  If your feet “hook” when you swim they act like parachutes at the end of your legs and will slow you down.  In extreme cases, the hooking effect can actually produce negative propulsion.
