We also get that going long can be a daunting challenge – especially when you are trying to balance a career and family commitments with training.  “Life” often makes that next PR at any distance seem like an impossible goal.

We’re here to help!

We take a holistic approach to training that is built upon our pillars of success

Health-Consistency-Balance

We place the health of our athletes above all else.  You can’t train or race if you are sick or injured.  We get to know you the individual and utilize the most recent proven training methods to lead you to YOUR goals.

We have led countless athletes to their first long course triathlon finish, to new PR’s and to podium finishes.  We continue to work with athletes from around the globe that are striving for excellence.

About BSC

Coach Scott

Scott began swimming at the age of 11 and by age 12 was a member of the nationally renowned Lakewood Aquatic Club under Coach Jim Montrella (ASCA Hall of Fame).  Though Scott enjoyed success in the pool, he knew even in his early teens that there had to be a better way to train then what was the “norm” back in the early 70’s – all out all the time – and the seeds of a coaching career were sown. Scott continued to swim during the transformation that took place in the world of athletics throughout the 70’s and 80’s as periodization, heart rate training, interval training and training with power all began to emerge.

Although Scott retired his competitive Speedo in 1982, that was merely a change in title, not the end of his athletic career. He had a desire to give back and pass on the gift he’d been given by his coach and coached an age-group swim team through the early 80’s.  At the same time, Julie Moss made her epic crawl that introduced the world to the sport of triathlon.  As the popularity of triathlon rapidly grew, so too did the number of adult-onset athletes struggling with the swim and Scott began to help them with their swim.  Scott was one of the first to argue that the goal of a triathlon swim is different then the goal of swim-meet swim and they must be trained for differently.  That led to “outside the box” thinking for cycling and run training as well.  Today, those beliefs – long slow runs, long slow rides, running strength work, focused weight program, high intensity interval work – have become commonplace.

Scott received a BS from the University of California in Cellular Biology and a minor concentration in Exercise Physiology.  Scott took the belief that things could be done better in the 70’s; was one of the athletes that validated the “new way” during the training method revolution of the 70’s and 80’s; cemented that knowledge with a formal education and has been coaching endurance athletes around the globe for over 30-years.

The History and Meaning of BSC

The story really begins in the water – or more accurately, in an email about the water.  Back near the beginning of 2016, Coach Scott received an email from an athlete who was somewhat swimming challenged.  OK, the athlete was a crappy swimmer.  He’d seen a response Coach Scott posted to a swimming question in a popular triathlon forum and recognized the response as coming from someone who had a deep understanding of swimming.  John reached out to Coach Scott inquiring about working together to make swimming less challeging.

Scott formally began coaching John in February 2016.  One of the first tasks was to improve John’s swimming, although John didn’t swim so much as he was trying to beat the water into submission.  After seeing some video, Coach Scott told John, “there’s a lot of low hanging fruit and we can have you swimming under 1:30/100 by race day.”  That was the first time John referred to Coach Scott as “his crazy coach.”

Fast forward to late spring – John was regularly swimming intervals below 1:28/100 – when the focus turned to cycling.  It became commonplace for Scott to receive a text from John after a particularly challenging workout that contained “the bird” emoji.  In early summer, as the volume ramped up, John finally referred to Coach Scott as his “Bat Shit Crazy coach.”

About the same time, Scott was working to move from part-time coaching to a full-time, full-service coaching business.  "BSC" had a certain ring to it that aligned with Coach Scott's belief that you have to be just a little bit different to be successful at Endurance sport.  It wasn't long after that BSC Multisport was born.
