{"id":249,"date":"2018-08-16T17:58:34","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T22:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/?p=249"},"modified":"2019-07-17T03:23:29","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T08:23:29","slug":"the-courage-to-go-easy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/16\/the-courage-to-go-easy\/","title":{"rendered":"The Courage to Go Easy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-246 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/iStock-485329544-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Woman walking\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/iStock-485329544-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/iStock-485329544-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/iStock-485329544-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/iStock-485329544-1200x800.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/bscmultisport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/iStock-485329544.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>The single biggest training mistake I see triathletes make \u2013 beginners and veterans alike \u2013 is they don\u2019t have the courage to go easy and end up going too hard on easy days.&nbsp; <!--more-->Raise your hand if you\u2019ve done this.&nbsp; Really, I can\u2019t see you, it\u2019s OK to raise your hand and admit you\u2019ve pushed too hard when the schedule said \u201cEASY.\u201d&nbsp; I get it, I\u2019m an athlete too and I regularly struggle with pushing too hard when it\u2019s supposed to be an easy active recovery day.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with pushing your easy days is that you don\u2019t allow yourself to truly recover.&nbsp; Meaning you can\u2019t really push those workouts that call for going hard.&nbsp; What happens is you end up doing ALL your workouts at 70-85% \u2013 you\u2019re going too hard to force adaptation to the aerobic energy pathway, and you\u2019re not going hard enough to force adaptation to the anaerobic energy pathways.&nbsp; Your training time becomes ineffective and you find yourself on a plateau.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips to help you go easy when your plan or your coach have an easy day on the schedule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you easy workouts ALONE. Doing easy workouts by yourself means YOU set the pace precisely where it needs to be.&nbsp; When you\u2019re working out with others, group mentality takes over, the competitive juices kick in, and suddenly you are way over target pace\/power \u2013 that\u2019s great when you want to push hard, but it\u2019s counter-productive on easy days.<\/li>\n<li>Leave your ego at home. When you\u2019re out on easy days, old folks and young kids should be passing you.&nbsp; Keep that in mind and you\u2019ll have the proper mindset.<\/li>\n<li>A heart rate monitor, GPS watch, or power-meter are great for telling you when you are going too hard. Set red-lines and STAY BELOW those limits.<\/li>\n<li>Remember the purpose of an active recovery workout. Rest is as important as training stress.&nbsp; You don\u2019t get stronger and faster when you workout \u2013 you get stronger and faster when you recover.<\/li>\n<li>Trust your coach or the author of the plan you are following.
